TEMPERATE CARNIVOROUS PLANT CARE SHEET
VENUS FLY TRAPS // SARRACENIA (NORTH AMERICAN PITCHER PLANTS) // TEMPARATE SUNDEWS (DROSERA BINATA, D. INTERMEDIA, D. FILIFORMIS (SSP)
WATER: DO NOT USE TAP WATER. It will kill the plant. Use reverse osmosis, distilled or rainwater. A gallon will last nearly a month for one tray depending on where you keep the plant and temperature (evaporation rate). Water as soon as the tray is empty. Do not let soil dry or it will turn brown in color.
SOIL: 50% sphagnum peat moss and 50% perlite or sand (I’ve found that sand retains water best. It looks nicer too). Premixed soil for this plant will be available for purchase in April 2024 at the Soil Bar.
LIGHT: Indoors near a bright sunny window or grow lights. Outdoors is best for full color and health of plant (although I’ve had success growing these inside next to a sunny east facing window). Move plant outside during winter so it can go into dormancy (required).
DORMANCY REQUIREMENT: Dormancy is absolutely required. Most if not all leaves will die back in late fall/early winter. This is necessary for the plant’s health. Trim leaves in late January to give space for new leaves. Plant should return in late February/early March when temperatures begin to consistently warm at 65 degrees or higher.
FERTILIZER: This plant will catch its own fertilizer. AVOID Miracle Gro and most fertilizers. It will likely kill the plant.
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
It is normal for leaves to die back. Prune them. If too many begin to turn black then email at info@webitenola.com so we can troubleshoot the issue.
